Grand Haven Mens Golf Assoc.
Born and raised in Southern California, I lived within a 30 minute drive of Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm. The former I never visited until my senior year of high school. Then I went 5 times in one year. As a teenager needing/wanting my own money, I spent summers cutting lawns of the neighborhood until I learned to drive and then got part time employment at numerous companies. I have worked in oil fields, driven an ice cream truck, and worked in service station. For 1 year I worked as an Assistant Route Manager and Chief Warehouse Clerk for a medical lab service.
I was married in 1973 and moved to Maryland that same year. I have 3 Children and 2 Grand Children. There I got a job working for the Potomac Electric Power Company, PEPCO. I was there for 34 years, going from Helper to Lead Electrical Mechanic in the Substation Construction and Maintenance Dept. While working for PEPCO, one of my last jobs was working with the electric conservation program. Switches were installed on customer’s a/c and water heater units. When the a/c or w/h failed, I was tasked with going to the customers’ house and determining if the switch was at fault. Most time it wasn’t and I would have to explain to the customer what the problem was. Not knowing anything about a/c at the time, I went to school and learned. Because of this training, I started my own a/c and heating company. I worked evening and weekends for the better part of 13 years doing maintenance and installations. I also taught a/c installation, after 3 years of study.
I met the next love of my life in 2002 and after 2 years we were married in Maryland. We bought our house here at Grand Haven in 2007 and moved in in 2008.
I started playing golf on a whim, in 1993, after joking with my best friend, that it wasn’t that hard to hit a ball sitting still with a big club. He of course denied this and challenged me to try it. So at a driving range one evening, he showed me how to hold the club and the mechanics of the swing. After spraying a dozen or so balls around, he commented that it wasn’t as easy as it looked, was it. But after a few more minutes, I was hitting balls straight and farther then he was. So I then borrowed some clubs and took lessons to see if I really wanted to play the game. And I have enjoyed almost every minute since. I have one Hole In One.
As a member of the MGA, I have enjoyed the company and the games we play. I have been the Webmaster and Tournament Director of this fine group.
