Lee Spancake
Spotlight Golfer
Lee was born on 9/11/42 in Pine Grove, PA (pop. ~1200 w/ 1 traffic light). He says the start of WWII brought on his birth. Do the MATH, it works. His dad was a barber and mom was a housewife. Lee was the first in his family to complete college, but sad that his father never lived to see that special day.
When he was growing up, he was lucky to shake hands with Harry Truman as President Truman campaigned on his ‘Whistle-stop’ tour in that famous election. In high school, Lee spent time in basketball, baseball and school government. No golf at this small town HS – that came later in life. Hiking and camping overnight along the nearby Appalachian Trail – 6 miles from his home - was always a great adventure. Scouting filled in more time as well. Working as a summer camp counselor for Philadelphia ‘inner city’ youth was a real eye-opener for a ‘rube’ from the ‘country’.
Lee attended Lebanon Valley College near Hershey, PA. The smell of chocolate was heavy in the air whenever the wind was out of the west – what a way to get to sleep at night in the dorm – chocolate bars dancing in your head and drool on your pillow. Lee met his wife to be, Lynn, in their freshman year at LVC. He fell hard for the red hair sitting in front of him in chemistry class. They married the year they graduated and will celebrate 49 happy years together this December. No children of their own, but have known many.
Both Lee and Lynn chose teaching as careers. Lynn taught 8th grade MATH and Lee was a High School Chemistry teacher. He loved all 37 years of that vocation until he retired in 2000. During that time he continued graduate work along with teaching Honors chemistry, AP chemistry and one-half year of Organic chemistry. His greatest joy was to see the sparkle in a student’s eyes when they finally grasped the concept he was presenting. Summers were spent working at Allied Chemical, teaching young people (5 – 16 years of age) the wonders of the ‘new’ age of the computer at Kean College and working at public and private golf courses.
Lee also coached golf (34 years) and girls X-country (12 years). One could not ask for a more dedicated group of students. Some of those students still write, call and others actually come and visit – sometimes for several days. They are their children. They love them all.
Another side of Lee is his love of good Sci-Fi movies and books. Favorites are ‘Forbidden Planet’ and the original version of ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’. The movie ‘October Sky’ captures a portion of his life as a teenager building rockets and learning the science that made them function.
Lee and Lynn relocated from Greenbrook, NJ to PC in 2003, built their ‘dream-house’ and moved into GH in 2004. Interesting people and GREAT golf make GH a special place to call home. Lee has never had a hole-in-one, but the excitement of playing each round with the KGB groups and the GHMGA make up for that.
Lee thanks the GHMGA for this chance to serve as their ‘Spotlight Golfer’. Lee has always thought of golf as the spotlight on the way we live our lives and play the game within a specific set of rules governing our play. This is the GREATEST GAME ever designed by man.
