Michael Wright
November 2023 Spotlight Golfer
Mike was born and raised in Lima (Lost In Middle America), Ohio a small town on I-75 about half way between Dayton and Toledo. His family owned a farm and Mike spent his early teenage years working there learning how to drive tractors and bail hay. He attended Lima Senior High School where he played golf and tennis. And that’s where he met Barbara, his wife of 57 years. Mike and Barbara have one daughter, Kristin, who lives in Richmond, VA and two grandsons. Some of you have met Kris’ husband Kevin, a former golf pro, who loves to visit and play Grand Haven. Mike has an older sister Pat who lives in San Francisco and had three older step brothers all deceased now. Mike’s father, Harold Wright, died when he was just one year old and his mother remarried Harry Wright when Mike was seven. Note the similar names. So when Mike tells folks he remembers his parents wedding they usually seem skeptical. The family joke has always been that mom just didn’t want to change the monograms on the towels.
A born and bred Buckeye, Mike attended Ohio State University even though everybody else in the family attended the University of Kentucky where one of his step brothers was on the facility. He was a rebel from an early age. After OSU Mike joined the US Air Force where he was introduced to what is now called Information Technology (IT) but back then was just called computer programming. Remember those similar names for his fathers? Try to explain that when getting background checks for security clearances. He spent nearly 50 years working “IT” in the northern Virginia suburbs and Washington, DC. Mike and Barbara were also lucky enough to spend five years in Heidelberg Germany where Mike worked for HQ US Army Europe and their daughter went to high school.
Before retiring Mike and Barbara were visiting neighbors who had a house on Pine Lakes Golf Course. While there, the friends suggested a visit to Grand Haven where they were thinking of buying a house. We fell in love with Grand Haven and knew that it was the place for us. We both retired on December 31, 2013, sold our house in Falls Church, VA, moved down here in May of 2014 and have never looked back. The Grand Haven community is a great place to relax and live the rest of our lives.
