The Shootout Competition is an important part of the MGA experience. Each week throughout the golf year shootout points are awarded to golfers competing in the weekly game. Points are awarded based on a 10 point distribution given to golfers ranked according to the finish of the game. For instance, first place is 10 points, second place nine points and so forth. These points accumulate each week until the period of the year ends and the top ten golfers compete in a "shootout" round held at the Grand Haven Golf Course. Below is a listing of past winners of the shootout.
PURPOSE:
To provide an environment that encourages fellowship, fun and participation in events sponsored by the GHMGA.
TIMING:
Shootout will be held three (3) times per year, approximately every 17 weeks. The contest will, if at all possible, be played on the ‘back nine’.
FEES:
$1.00 per player will be collected from each participant in Wednesday play (part of the $5.00 per player collected, with the other $4.00 collected being paid out in prize money and CTP or Skins prizes.
POINTS EARNED:
Each member who participates in a weekly game will earn one point. A member who wins an individual event or is a member of a winning team will earn ten additional points. Second place finishers will be awarded nine additional points, third place finishers will be awarded eight additional points, etc. down to a tenth place finisher, if needed, who will be awarded one additional point.
CONTESTANTS:
The top ten on the Points Earnings list will participate. In the event that ties bring the number of would-be participants over the limit of ten, a chip-off will be conducted among those who qualified with the fewest points to choose enough participants to bring the total to down to ten.
FORMAT:
Contestants will participate in a medal play format, nine-hole elimination match with full handicap for all players. All players will play from their usual tees with handicap adjustments applied appropriately. On the first hole, all 10 (ten) participants will tee off. At the conclusion of the first hole of play, the nine players with the lowest scores will advance to the next hole. In case of ties, a chip-off will be held to determine who will be eliminated. After each succeeding hole, one additional player per hole will be eliminated, based on highest score, until a winner is determined on the ninth hole. A chip-off will be used to break ties.
CHIP-OFF RULES:
One of the MGA Board members supervising the event will place two tees in the ground approximately 6-7 feet apart, designating the location where the contestants will place their ball and proceed to chip to the green. All players involved in the chip-off, but not yet chipping will stand with their backs to the chipping area until directed to take their respective turns by the MGA officials supervising the chip-off. Any player who turns toward the chipping area before being directed to do so will be considered the loser and will be eliminated on the spot. The player(s) whose chip(s) is (are) on the green and closest to the pin will move on and the ball furthest from the flag will be considered the loser and will be out of the competition. Any chipped (or putted) ball not resting on the green will be considered to be a losing effort. In the event that more than one player leaves the ball off the green and only one contestant is to be eliminated, then only those players’ chips will be re-done to determine which player is eliminated.
PAYOUTS:
Each player eliminated on the first hole will receive a prize payment of $10.00. Each player eliminated after that through the eighth hole will receive a prize payment equal to $5.00 more than the previous hole. The runner-up will receive a prize payment of $75.00 and the champion will receive a prize payment of $125.00. (Note: Prize payments may be reduced if available funds are not sufficient to cover this payout scheme. In this event, payments will be determined by the Executive Board and will be announced to contestants at the start of play.) In the event that weather postpones the Shootout, all those who originally qualified will still be eligible to participate when the event is re-scheduled. Should inclement weather bring the event to an untimely end, those left at the conclusion will equally share the remaining prize money.
REFRESHMENTS:
For the enjoyment of Shootout participants and spectators, a beverage cart will be available, courtesy of the GHMGA.
