Grand Haven Mens Golf Assoc.
May 2021 Spotlight Golfer
Tim Mott
Tim was born in Sag Harbor, New York, a village with a fulltime resident population of approximately 2700 on the east end of Long Island. Elementary and High School were both within walking distance of home, truly small-town living. Growing up surrounded by water lent itself to his becoming an avid fisherman, also enjoying shell fishing for clams, scallops and lobsters. He still owns his Dad’s 1956 fifteen-foot flat bottom row boat that was used to do much of this fishing. During High School Tim played basketball, golf and baseball. He continued to run, manage and play in a men’s fast pitch softball league for twenty-five years. He also ran and coached Little League for fifteen years. Unfortunately, Tim really didn’t have the opportunity to get back into golf until retirement. While in High School and after graduating, he went to work full time for the A&P Grocery Store in the Village employed as a Floor Manager responsible for all the ordering in the store. His employment ended after 6 years when the A&P food chain went out of business. He was married to BJ Mott and had just bought their first home, so needing employment,he went to work as a carpenter with his uncle who was a builder in Sag Harbor. Both of Tim’s grandfathers were carpenters, and he is sure there was a bit of carpentry in his blood. After working with his uncle for two years, he decided to go into business on his own, starting out with a pick-up truck and a table saw in his garage.
In 2002 his son Sean moved back to Long Island from Georgia and became his partner – T&S Mott General Contracting Inc was born. Tim’s daughter also moved back to Sag Harbor from Boston in 2005. She is a landscape architect and they would cross paths on many projects for the next fourteen years. Since a good many celebrities congregate on the east end of Long Island, they got involved with some very interesting clients and projects. Sag Harbor was one of the busiest whaling ports on the eastern seaboard in its day and has many historic structures, some dating back to the 1690’s. One of his projects was renovating the oldest house in the Village which had been built by a whaling Captain. Being born in Sag Harbor, working side by side with his son, and daughter on occasion, to help restore history was incredibly satisfying.
In August of 2019, it was time to retire and turn T&S Mott over to his son. After forty-five years, the time had come for Tim and BJ to retire and enjoy the fruits of their labors. Although fishing is his first love, it was time to get back into golf - with a bit of a shove from B J. They feel extremely fortunate to have found such a wonderful community where they can enjoy retirement with such wonderful people.
