Tom Sweeney

Spotlight Golfer

The MGA Board is happy to announce that Tom Sweeney had been selected as our latest “Spotlight Golfer”.  Tom has participated in our organization for many years, and has been an important part of it’s leadership.  Everyone knows when Tom is around with his physical and verbal presence, and ability to keep things loose.  In addition, he’s usually in the hunt on a weekly basis, and enjoys competing.  Tom Sweeney is a well-deserved “Spotlight” award winner.

Tom was born in Scranton, PA, many years ago, and was raised in a family of five boys.  Being the middle man, hand-me-downs were a staple of his wardrobe, and very much appreciated.  After a number of years in high school, he attended an up-state New York university under an alumni assistance scholarship, and received an Industrial Engineering degree.

He married his high school sweetheart Barbara, and began working for the Endicott Johnson Shoe Company in Endicott, N. Y.  Of those he considered, this was the only firm that allowed him to play football and work full time.  After a few years with the semi-pro Tricity Eagles of the Atlantic Coast League, and some pro football too, he became president of the Frye Boot Company in Marlboro, MA.  Tom and Barbara started Westies retail, and operated these stores until retirement.

The Sweeney’s raised four children, a daughter Christine, and sons Tom Jr., Mark Anthony, and Scott. They now have six grand children, four in MA and two in Arizona.  Son Mark Anthony died tragically at the age of twenty one.

In 1999, Tom and Barb purchased a Grand Haven lot and built what was to be a winter residence.  However, after two winters here, they decided that Grand Haven was the place to live full-time, and they closed their business and moved here permanently in 2002.

Once fulltime in Grand Haven, Tom became involved in many boards, committees, and the Board of Governors.  Tom believes that the “Grand” in Grand Haven” is an understatement.

Congratulations Tom and we’re glad to have you here!
