December 2024 Spotlight Golfer
Tony Blackmore

I was born in a very small 12th century coaching village, called Coleshill in Warwickshire, England.
The town was actually first settled in the Stone Age AD43.
My parents were both business owners.
I went to school where I focused on following my father’s engineering business, but unfortunately the business closed months before I left school, so I went to a local college and studied for an engineering degree.
I have always been very interested in all sports, representing my high school at Soccer, Cricket, Basketball, Athletics, Tennis & Rugby.
At that time Golf was not as accessible locally, and so I did not play often.
However, as I lived near to the Belfy (Ryder Cup Course) I did get to play a little.
One of my best golfing memories was watching the Ryder Cup in 1989 and being only 10 feet away from Severiano Ballesteros playing a six iron from off the car park asphalt,165 yards to within 2 feet of the pin.
When my wife, Emma and I moved initially to Toronto Canada in 2002, I began playing golf a little more regularly. We stayed there for 2 years and then crossed Lake Ontario to Rochester NY, where we enjoyed 9 years. In 2013, after several visits we moved into Grand Haven and have loved every minute, so far. The fact that year-round golf was possible in Florida made me focus more on playing and improving a little.
Our very good friends Joe & Gail Cosgrove encouraged both myself and Emma to play more often and so we played weekly for a few years at different courses throughout the area, until joining Grand Haven Golf Club earlier this year.
Joining the men’s league has helped a lot, both with meeting more people and playing golf more regularly. I am looking forward to making more friends and becoming more competitive with all the friendly people I play with and against.
