Anthony Sciuto
Spotlight Golfer
Anthony (Tony) Sciuto got hooked on golf when he was twelve years old while caddying at Bethpage G.C., a short distance from his home. It is no surprise that he was on the golf team in High School and later at State Univ. Of N.Y. at Oswego. Upon graduation, Tony signed for the draft and served with the U.S. Army in Frankfort. He even managed to fit in some good golf while there. European travel was an option and his little VW took him to places such as Paris, Madrid, Zurich, Rome, Copenhagen and if not driving, he managed to cop flights to Greece and London.
Returning to N.Y., Tony got started on his career, teaching Industrial Arts at his old High School while working on his Master’s in Education and then went into Administration. Tony met his wife, Anne, in New York and together they raised six daughters, described by some as “Tony’s six-pack.” In 1964, having an entrepreneurial spirit and a lot of energy, Tony’s first extra-curricular venture was designing a fire-alarm system for homeowners. In the early 60’s, Tony and Anne received their N.Y. State Insurance Brokers’ licenses and created ATS Insurance. Meanwhile, Tony drew the plans for and built their ten-room home in Huntington. In 1969, after selling their insurance company, Tony started a successful business, prefabricating small buildings, ranging from 6x10 to 10x20, one of which was installed on the roof of a consulate in Manhattan. In 1977, he bought Stone Dock G.C. in High Falls, N.Y., a scenic 9-hole course bordering the Rondout Creek, where that rich Hudson Valley soil never needed fertilizer. He developed additional acreage into 32 one-acre sites, on which he supervised the building of chalet style homes of his own design, no doubt influenced by those German and Swiss chalets.
Retiring from education at age 55, Tony and Anne headed to Bonita Bay G.C in Bonita Springs. Tony suddenly had plenty of time to enjoy his favorite sport and it was there he shot his 3rd and 4th Holes-in-One. Ten years later, growing tired of the heavy traffic and Gulf heat, they discovered Grand Haven, where for the past eighteen years they have enjoyed living by 9th hole and catching the cool Atlantic breezes on the lanai. Tony and Anne enjoy many visits from children and grandchildren and post-covid are looking forward to meeting their two new great-grandsons. While Tony golfs, Anne reads voraciously, enjoys oil painting, writing, walking the Esplanade and Zoom meetings with the family.
Grand Haven’s 14th and 17th gave Tony his 5th and 6th Holes-in One. He continues to play golf three or four times a week in hopes of adding his 7th.
